Being ready matters
I had the privilege of helping YJ bring his carefully planned proposal to life. When the proposal day arrived, we had already gone through the plan together multiple times, to make sure that we're all on the same page, reducing any chances of miscoordination. He and XW were to meet up at Henderson Waves, for some quiet time after a busy day. After a short stroll, he would surprise her by leading her to a beautifully arranged proposal setup, with some cherished items and photos that'll run them through memory lane, before he'd propose.
As simple as this plan sounds, surprise proposals often require flexibility, especially when it comes to timing. Adjustments are sometimes needed to keep the flow natural, and to avoid any pressure that could risk spoiling the surprise.
The advantage of being early
YJ and I were at the venue about 1.5 hours beforehand, allowing ample time for him to set things up, and for me to lend a helping hand whenever needed. It also gave us room to navigate any unforeseen challenges.
The sunlight throughout this time was beautifully golden. It made for some wonderful preparation photos. Everything was coming together flawlessly.
Handling the unexpected
The clouds looked heavy, but we didn't think too much of it. At that moment, the sky was breathtaking, graced by a beautiful rainbow.
XW had some delays, so the proposal timing had to be postponed a little. We just hoped that it was in time before all sunlight was gone.
It soon started pouring with rain, forcing us to decide if we should relocate the proposal setup to a more sheltered area or leave it and embrace the risk. After a quick discussion, we both decided to leave it, as the clouds seemed to be moving across quite quickly.
I stayed to shelter the setup, while YJ headed off to meet XW at their rendezvous point.
The proposal unfolds!
The couple is finally together! Was so relieved that their was still natural light. The rain also eased at this point. What a relief.
While we may have missed sunset, we were treated to the wonderful hues of the blue hour. Doesn't YJ's outfit complement the scene perfectly?
YJ and XW enjoyed each other's company, reminiscing their life journey together thus far. The Henderson Waves lights certainly illuminated their silhouettes, adding a magical element to the moment.
I made suer to keep my distance, so that they could savor their private time together, but had to sneak in closer for a few quick emotional shots.
Earlier that day, I did remind YJ not to rush it, to take it slow and truly live the once-in-a-lifetime moment. He definitely did, so proud of him!
After a solid amount of time, it was time for the main event.
Of course she said "YES!". I gave them some space, and photographed the rest of the proposal from a distance, letting the moment naturally unfold.
Couple photoshoot at Henderson Waves
After the proposal, we spent a comfortably paced 1.5 hours to capture some beautiful couple portraits around the area. It started to rain again, much more heavily this time. We took some photographs under shelter, before doing some at other photo spots. I hope you will enjoy the following images!
Reflections
YJ's and XW's surprise proposal was as perfect as it gets! It went without a hitch, the couple couldn't have been happier, and the photographs turned out absolutely stunning!
