Fresh ideas for a couple photoshoot
Ben and Jenny managed to carve out some time during their visit to Japan, for a couple photoshoot. I recently scouted at the Imperial Palace and Osaka Castle, marked out some nice angles to photograph. I was so excited to give them a try with Ben and Jenny.
I also wanted to limit the shoot to just using a 50mm prime (fixed) lens, to challenge myself and inspire some creativity. I was stuck on shooting with a 24-70mm zoom lens for the longest time due to it's convenience, which cultivated a lazy habit of moving around less as I could get both wide and tight shots without moving an inch. The downside is sacrificing the opportunity to take photographs with more variations and perspectives. With a prime lens that can't zoom, I'd have to run front and back, or "zoom" with my feet. Moving around sometimes let's you discover interesting ideas you'd never thought of otherwise.
Couple photography poses
When it comes to photographing couples, they are usually always camera shy, have no idea how to pose, or both. It's my responsibility to ensure that they feel comfortable and confident in being their natural selves, as well as take their focus away from being camera conscious. This allows for photographs with raw and genuine emotions, which is my preference and style.
I typically start off with a short run-down of the flow of the session, explaining what types of poses we'd be doing, which spots we'll be shooting at, etc. This reminds the couple that they're in good hands, and also prevents any surprises down the line. I also make it a habit to show them the photos after every couple of poses, so that they know that they're looking good, which keeps the mood lighthearted and joyful.
Couple photoshoot at Tokyo's Imperial Palace
We started off at Tokyo's Imperial Palace, choosing a quiet corner of the palace that still showed-off its traditional architecture, with juxtaposition against Tokyo's modern skyline. We wanted the photoshoot to be distraction free, so that we can focus on Ben and Jenny, and not navigating through visitors.
Jenny brought her film camera and we had some fun with it.
Couple photoshoot at Osaka Castle
We spent time at Osaka Castle on a separate day. It's such a beautiful and iconic place to take photos at. We photographed at a perfect spot, away from most of the crowd, with trees perfectly framing the castle. There was a light drizzle which helped disperse some crowd in the open areas, which also presented us with an overcast sky, which was perfect for the vibe of this session.
Of course, some sweet couple poses!
We did the same lifting pose from our Tokyo session, which Ben and Jenny named the "Aeroplane Pose", as they enjoyed it so much.
We concluded the session with some shots focusing on the beautiful castle.
