Planning the dream elopement: Five months in the making
When Mike and Zelma reached out about their elopement, we started planning nearly five months ahead, plenty of time to dream, discuss, and design this beautiful chapter of their lives.
They were instantly drawn to Fukui’s stunning coastline, and honestly, so was I. I’d never been there before, and the idea of exploring new scenery for such a meaningful shoot had me all in.
What made it even more exciting was their wish to include a kimono and hakama photoshoot on the second day, blending the modern and traditional sides of Japan into one celebration.
Scouting the perfect elopement spot
I arrived a day earlier to scout our chosen elopement locations in person as photos can only tell you so much. After an afternoon of driving along Fukui’s coast, snapping pictures, and sharing updates with Mike and Zelma, we finally settled on a spot that looked perfect in real life.
The anticipation started to feel real.
The morning of the elopement
We met bright and early at 8 AM at the makeup artist’s studio. Zelma started first, since her look took longer, while Mike arrived at around 9 AM to style (and impulse cut) his hair.
Before we began, I suggested something special: a “first look.” I had seen others do it, but this was my first time capturing one myself. Mike waited outside the studio, “blindfolded,” as Zelma stepped out to surprise him.

The moment was pure emotion. Both of them teary-eyed and overjoyed. I’m so glad we captured it.
The elopement ceremony by the coast
Once hair and makeup were done, we snapped a few shots with the talented makeup team before heading off in separate cars to the elopement location.

I took some time to set up both my photography and video gear, trying to position everything perfectly (though I definitely photobombed the video a few times, oops 😅).

The summer sun was already warm, but spirits were high.
After a few touch-ups from the makeup artist, Mike and Zelma stood in place, joined by their good friend, Leo, who officiated the ceremony.
The atmosphere was calm, intimate, and full of love. They took their time with their vows, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect.

After the “I Do”
Once the ceremony wrapped up, I gave them some space. Just the two of them, soaking in the moment. I always think it’s important to pause right after a big moment like this. It’s not just about taking photos; it’s about living it.

We then explored more of the Fukui coastline, capturing candid, joy-filled photos against the cliffs and sea breeze. Each frame felt like a reflection of their energy, lighthearted, genuine, and deeply connected. Please scroll to the bottom to enjoy the photos.
Day two: Kimono & hakama session
The next day brought a whole new vibe. Mike and Zelma changed into traditional Japanese attire, a kimono and hakama, for a shoot that celebrated Japan’s culture and timeless beauty. The mix of elegance, laughter, and vibrant colors made for such a memorable second day.
